La FDA aprueba agregar ácido fólico a la masa de maiz



La Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos (FDA) aprobó la fortificación con ácido fólico de la masa de maíz ampliamente utilizada por los latinos, reporta NBC News. Según la FDA, el ácido fólico es una vitamina B que cuando se toma por una mujer embarazada puede ayudar a prevenir defectos congénitos del tubo neural, que son defectos que afectan el cerebro, la columna vertebral y la médula espinal. "El aumento de consumo del ácido fólico ha sido de gran ayuda en la reducción de la incidencia de defectos del tubo neural en la población general", dijo Susan Mayne, Ph.D., a del centro de la FDA para la seguridad de los alimentos y nutrición. New Anti-Smoking Campaign Targets Minorities of Color



The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) is launching “Fresh Empire” a hip-hop themed anti-tobacco campaign targeted at Latinos and Blacks. “Unfortunately, the health burdens of tobacco use disproportionately affect minority teens – particularly African American and Hispanic youth,” said Jonca Bull, M.D., the FDA’s Assistant Commissioner for Minority Health in a press release. "The 'Fresh Empire' campaign will help reach teens at a key point in their lives when experimenting with smoking can lead to addiction." La FDA aprueba dispositivo para ayudar a pacientes con enfermedad de Parkinson



La administración de alimentos y medicinas (FDA, por sus siglas en inglés) recientemente aprobó un dispositivo que  estimula el cerebro para personas que sufren de Parkinson, el cual afecta desproporcionalmente a los latinos. El dispositivo Brio Neurostimulation system, “es un  dispositivo implantadle que ayuda a reducir los síntomas del mal de Parkinson, el cual causa temblor en diferentes partes del cuerpo,” dijo la FDA en un comunicado de prensa. El Brio System fue aprobado por la FDA después de dos pruebas clínicas, una con 127 pacientes quienes usaron el dispositivo por seis meses, y la otra con 136 pacientes quienes los usaron por tres meses. “Ambos grupos demostraron cambios significativos al momento que el aparato fue encendido de cuando fue apagado,” dijo ...
