In Texas, 18 percent of residents live in households that cannot always afford enough food.USDA

With this in mind, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has funded a toll-free hotline to make it easier for resident of Texas to access private and governmental resources.

Using the hotline, callers can get connected to emergency food providers in their community, nutritional assistance programs and other services.

During the summer months the hotline provides information on meal sites where children under 18 years old can get free and nutritious meals under USDA’s Summer Food Service Program.

“USDA’s nutrition assistance programs provide a nutrition safety net, helping to put food on the table in households across America. And the toll-free hotline is there for those in need to access this assistance, as well as help provided by private resources, “Agriculture under Secretary Kevin Concannon said.

The hotline can be reached at 1-866-3-HUNGRY or 1-877-8-HAMBRE (for Spanish) from Monday through Friday (7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CST).
